What do I write about?
You could write about where you live, your friends and family, your interests or perhaps interesting customs and traditions you engage in.
Do I have to write in Spanish?
If you could write in Spanish that would be great, but English is also fine. We have a team of volunteer translators who work for us in their spare time
What's a good example of a letter?
If you would like to write in Spanish you may find the following phrases useful:
Queridos José y todos en tu proyecto. (Dear José and everyone in your project.)
Espero que todo vaya bien con ustedes en Guatemala. (I hope that everything is ok with all of you in Guatemala.)
Muchas gracias por tu carta. (Thank you so much for your letter.)
Somos 4 en mi familia. (There are four of us in my family)
Vivo en Manchester. (I live in Manchester.)
Tengo 36 años. (I am 36 years old.)
Hace frío/hace sol en esta época del año. (It’s cold/it’s sunny at this time of year.)
Los tengo en el pensamiento. (Thinking of you all.)
Estoy orando por ti y tu proyecto (I’m praying for you and your Project)
Que Dios les bendiga. (God bless you all.)
Con mucho cariño de… (With much love from…)
We look forward to receiving your mail. Please take the opportunity to pray for your child and their project when you are writing to them.
How long will it take for my post to arrive?
Anything you send will take approximately six to eight weeks to reach your child.
Can I send birthday greetings?
We encourage sponsors not to send their Ambassadors birthday greeting because they represent other children in their projects, who, naturally, will not receive cards from the UK on their birthdays - we want to ensure fairness. But please do send other mail that the children can share, including Christmas cards, as they love to receive it. Each year we send out information around September time about how you can get involved in sending Christmas greetings to the children.
Can I send my child other things?
We will gladly send on a photo with your postcard or something else light and flat that the children can share.
Please ensure that the weight of your letter is not excessive. Other than that, please do not send gifts. Sending heavy parcels greatly increases our UK costs. Also, our partners overseas have asked us not to send presents as some children feel left out if presents are sent to one child and not another. Part of your sponsorship money includes buying a Christmas present for all the children at the projects. It is much better for the local tradesmen and the regional economy if gifts are bought locally.
