"Rights" are things that every child should have or should be able to do freely. The 'Convention on the Rights of the Child' describes what these rights are. Here are a few of them:
Your safety....
you have the right -
to be alive.
to be protected from kidnapping.
to be protected from being hurt or badly treated, in body or in mind.
Caring for you...
you have the right -
to live with your parents, unless it is bad for you
to choose your own friends.
to special care and help, if you cannot live with your parents.
to care and protection if you are in foster care.
to special education and care if you have a disability.
A life of opportunity...
you have the right -
to an identity - an official record of who you are.
to get information that is important to you and your health and well-being.
to the best health care possible.
to help from the government if you are poor or in need.
to choose your own religion and beliefs.
to good quality education.
You also have the right...
to food, clothing, a safe place to live and to have your basic needs met. You should not be disadvantaged so that you can't do many of the things other children can do.
By having all of your rights recognised and upheld, you will have the chance of a full and happy life.

Children who live and work on the streets have these rights too...
...but their rights are not being recognised and upheld.
This boy is sleeping on the streets. He does not have a safe place to live or enough food.
This boy has to work on the streets to make money, in order to survive. He is probably not able to go to school and get the education he needs and deserves.
