Children make a complete break from the streets when they join a hostel. Here, they have to leave behind any drugs and destructive relationships from the streets.
It is tough to learn to stay under a roof again and to leave behind street ways and street friends. 24/7 intensive care is needed and the staff here do an incredible job as they support the children who often release a lot of anger and pain at this stage.
It is often during this time that the children really start to open up and share their stories. They are given psychological as well as spiritual and emotional support as they deal with past memories.
After three months'rehabilitation, the children are ready to join a home. Very often the children are almost unrecognisable. Having joined a hostel from the streets, malnourished and suffering with various skin complaints and other illnesses, they are well fed and also well nourished emotionally and spiritually.
The despair of wondering whether they will survive another night on the streets is replaced with dreams for the future.
Crises can happen at any time. A parent can fall ill and in hospital, leave the children unattended and prey to those who would hurt them. A teenager leaving a street gang's life can be threatened. A child might need shortterm crisis care because of an abusive relative.
We are grateful for a refuge and protection house for children and families who are in crisis situations. The time spent in the refuge allows them to receive support and guidance for the future.
