The Toybox Cycle Challenge 2010
- Miles of Smiles for Street Children

An exciting new challenge for the charity Toybox – one that will help reach more street children in Latin America. Toybox is organizing a brand new sponsored cycle challenge for 2010 - Hadrian’s Cycleway (route 72) from Whitehaven to Newcastle in just 3 days!

The challenge will take you through some of the country’s most beautiful countryside and along part of Hadrian’s Wall. The route is approximately 144 miles in total averaging 47 miles per day.

Challenge dates: Sat 14th - Mon 16th August 2010

What’s involved?

  • Friday - meet in Whitehaven for full briefing on the challenge ahead.
  • Saturday - the longest day… Our challenge starts early in the morning from Whitehaven. We will cycle a fairly flat 66 miles to our first overnight stop at Carlisle.
  • Sunday - time for a breather… We will cycle 34 miles to Once Brewed in Northumberland for our second overnight stay.
  • Monday - finish line in sight… We will cycle 41 miles on our final leg to Newcastle Upon-Tyne, dip our wheels in at Priory Castle to complete Coast to Coast! We will stay in Newcastle YHA overnight.
  • Tuesday morning - return you, your cycle and luggage to Whitehaven.

The full fee for the 3 day cycle challenge is £138

 

What do Toybox Provide?

  • Accommodation at Carlisle, Once Brewed & Newcastle Upon-Tyne
  • Breakfast, lunch from the van & all evening meals except at Carlisle (A list of eating establishments will be provided)
  • An experienced cyclist to lead the team
  • Support vehicle with first aider
  • Transport from Newcastle to Whitehaven at the end of the challenge (including cycles, baggage and you)
  • Car Park availability at Whitehaven School, Cleator Moor Road, Whitehaven, CA28 8TY (2 miles from Whitehaven Marina)

What you need to do

  • Get yourself to and from Whitehaven for the start of the event
  • Book your accommodation for Whitehaven for the evening of Friday 13th August
  • Keep fit (get fit!)
  • Provide your own bicycle (we would advise a mountain, touring or hybrid cycles - some of the paths are unsuitable for full racing cycles)
  • Raise donations for the street children! There is no set minimum or maximum but most people find it helpful to set themselves a target like £750 and hope to achieve much more! Donations can be Gift Aided
  • The full fee for the 3 day cycle challenge is: £138 – a £40 deposit is needed to secure your place.
